American folk musician — Rhiannon Giddens is widely known for her eclectic folk tunes. She was also a founding member of the blues, country, and old-time music band, Carolina Chocolate Drops. She took part as their lead singer, banjo & fiddle player. With the group, they won a Grammy Award for “Best Folk Album.” In her solo career, the musician released a couple of studio albums, including “Tomorrow Is My Turn,” “Freedom Highway,” and “You're the One.” In 2023, an opera “Omar” was co-written by Giddens and Michael Abels, winning a Pulitzer Prize for Music.
Throughout her life, Giddens was dedicated to music. Studied opera as a graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory at Oberlin College, and sharing her banjo and fiddle playing skills with various artists, the folk musician navigated her passion for music, staying true to her artistry — being the only remaining original member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops in 2013 and subsequently kicking off her solo career.
Reuniting with former bandmate Justin Robinson to create “What Did the Blackbird Say to the Crow,” the duo takes a deep reflection about the world, and created music that best depicts society today, and music’s role in this world that we live in. Amidst a time of hate, wars, “assaults on reality,” it’s an album that simply takes you back home.
“With the assaults on reality going on in the world today, we wanted to offer another kind of record, like walking back onto a gravel or dirt road while a stampede goes the other way,” said Gidden. “It’s a reminder that another way exists, with music made for your community’s enjoyment and for dancing–not solely for commercial purposes.”
Be sure to witness Giddens’ amazing ability to tell a story on stage as she performs songs across her career. Book your tickets now!
